This is the Strait of Malacca. And for China, it is not just a trade corridor. Former Chinese President Hu Jintao famously called it Beijing's greatest strategic vulnerability, the "Malacca Dilemma." If that strait were ever closed off or controlled by a hostile power, China's industrial economy would face slow strangulation. Its factories would run short of raw materials. Its energy imports would be choked.
